Does Coffee Have Any Antioxidant Benefits?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009
coffee
Aaron Matthews Morgan asked:

Before we get all excited over the recent news about coffee being our new antioxidant, we need to take a look at the entire picture. Is there truly a coffee antioxidant? If there is, how exactly is coffee an antioxidant? Does it become the antioxidant when it’s heated? Does the coffee antioxidant benefit everyone? Are there still dangers to drinking coffee? How much coffee is good for us and when does it become bad for us?

Brewed coffee contains many antioxidants and consumption of antioxidant-rich brewed coffee may inhibit diseases caused by oxidative damages. Antioxidants are said to be an inhibitor of certain types of diseases. However, coffee beans are not all a like. Not all coffee beans are of the same quality or even the same make up. Sort of like comparing tennis shoes to sandals. Both go on your feet, but they are not made up of the same components. You can actually break coffee down into several different water-soluble components. The dietary fiber derived from roasted coffee silverskin. This is one component of the coffee bean that has high antioxidant content. This is how the scientists find out about the antioxidant benfits of coffee in their studies. What they do in fact is the break down the coffee beans into different components. They filter out the components that the coffee antioxidant is found in, and then they test lab rats in a variety of experiments to determine how well they survive with or without the various additives in their diet. When they discover something really swell, like a coffee antioxidant, our culture of coffee drinking addicts suddenly becomes a feverorish mob.

For years and years we’ve heard bad things about coffee. For example: it’s bad for your heart, increases blood pressure, may cause ****** cancer, probably keeps you awake at night, and my personal favorite, has a poisonous gas when brewed. When the world of coffee addicts even gets a tiny hint that coffee could have something beneficial, believe me they don’t just drink more coffee, they try to get everyone to join them. So, here we now have scientific studies proving to us that coffee has antioxidants.

Researchers have identified several compounds in coffee that create a coffee antioxidant. Why would this be of interest to us? Because scientific studies are showing that antioxidants may help prevent cancer. You see the connection here. However, until human studies are done, science cannot state exactly how much coffee must be consumed in order gain this protection against colon cancer or any other type of cancer. Before the coffee is roasted the antioxidant benefits are varied. However, once the coffee is roasted and served as a drink things get evened out. They all seem to have the same degrees of antioxidants.

Some studies suggest coffee having other benefits such as added fertility in men and some benefits for those suffering from diabetes. You’ll have to read those studies on your own. The fact that a coffee antioxidant exists may be true, but the reality is that coffee can be just as harmful if your body doesn’t like it, if you consume too much, if you have high blood pressure, and if it keeps you awake at night. Is there truly a coffee antioxidant? Yes, but the actual amount needed to be consumed in order to receive the anti-cancer benefits by humans is unknown. How exactly is coffee an antioxidant?

Coffee alone isn’t the antioxidant, it’s several different components that are part of the coffee bean. Roasting and heating the coffee changes the total antioxidant output. Does it become the antioxidant when it’s heated? It seems that although some coffee beans like green coffee beans may be higher in antioxidants that other more common beans, once they are roasted and heated for consumption, the results are the same regarding the antioxidantal benefits. Does the coffee antioxidant benefit everyone? Honestly, this is NOT a question easily answered. In fact, the truth is it is still unknown just how beneficial coffee antioxidants are for humans. Are there still dangers to drinking coffee? Yes, of course there is. If you have high blood pressure and you have seen how coffee enhances this problem, you know it’s bad for YOU personally. If you can’t get proper sleep or you drive everyone around you nuts because you can’t sit still or shut-up, you know coffee is bad for you.

Use common sense and listen to your body. Coffee is not good for everyone and unknown just how good for anyone. How much coffee is good for us and when does it become bad for us? Again drink coffee in moderation, pay attention to your own body. Exercise and good eating habits are a far better way to get healthy than drinking 10 cups of cappuccino a day. All things in moderation. After reading everything about this new thing called a coffee antioxidant I have decided that there are better ways of getting antioxidants into my blood.

Coffee may have many benefits, but so does water and it is possible to drown from drinking too much water. Yes, I know, you have to really drink a lot to accomplish this, but it’s the principle of the matter. Too much of anything is not a good thing.

Hard Water and Scale Cost Companies Billions of Dollars!

Lou Mele asked:

Hard water and build-up of scale have become a multi-billion dollar worldwide problem. Scale wastes enormous amounts of energy and reduces the lifespan of any equipment that uses water. The build-up of scale has become a big issue in virtually every industry using water in its daily operations.

Think about dishwashers and coffee makers in restaurants and fast-food joints, washing machines in hotels, watering equipment in agricultural or service-related industry, cooling towers in the petrochemical plants, to focus on just a few areas. Consider hundreds of millions of pipes, showers, water heaters, boilers, nozzles, valves, heat exchangers, spas, compressor heads and chillers, all needing to be prematurely replaced due to scale formation.

Think about Starbucks or Tim Hortons! Imagine if only one of Starbucks’ locations had to spend $10,000 a year per location to prematurely replace some of its machines because of scale formation, the chain-wide savings from using a technology developed by Megola Inc., could be measured at $83 MILLION per year! In other words, Starbucks could boost its annual profits by over 20%, and increase its shareholder value by $4BILLION. This is not already a case, however some Tim Horton locations have already installed these ingenious units, but it clearly demonstrates how big a financial problem scale really is to these multinational companies.

Companies and farms spend hundreds of millions of dollars on increased energy costs because scale-polutted machines consume more energy than necessary. With a scale build-up of just 13mm, you could easily spend three times as much on fuel to run your operations! With Oil prices at record levels, companies are more willing more than ever to explore energy-saving options. This should further fuel the demand for Megola’s revolutionary technology. Much information on the perils of scale and how it effects the economy and everyone’s life is more clearly explained at the Megola’s website. Scale build-up in equipment reduces energy efficiency dramatically. Depending on the thickness of the layer of scale, up to 70% more fuel is required for the same outcome as compared to equipment with no scale build-up. Considering that hard water is present in over 85% of the geographical region of North America, it is no doubt that scale is a real problem.

How does scale form? Hard water is actually an unfavorable natural process. Natural water contains dissolved minerals. If significant amounts of calcium and carbonate are among these minerals, the water is said to be “hard”. The amount of dissolved calcium and carbonate determines the hardness, which is commonly measured in degrees or parts per million.

As rain falls, it dissolves carbon dioxide gas from the air and becomes a weak solution of carbonic acid. As the acid rainwater passes through the ground, it erodes and slowly dissolves limestone rock. Limestone, which is found virtually everywhere on earth, typically consists of calcium carbonate, which is responsible for the hardness that causes scale.

Scale is a result of the abnormal behavior of calcium carbonate, which becomes less soluble as water temperatures increase. This means that as hard water is heated, the calcium carbonate can no longer stay dissolved and precipitates - or falls out of the water - as scale.

Megola has developed a device that will solve these hard water problems while not harming the environment in any way. For more valuable information on the problems and effects of scale visit the website of Megola Inc.

Alien asked:

An Espresso maker is approximately a need in the present day. Every person wants a bit boost up in the morning. A tiring work agenda, a chaotic travel, and house life and leisure pursuits fill up our days and frequently leave us tired. Fortunately, coffee is a huge means to wake up in the morning and offer you with extra boost you require to make it during one busier day. Espresso coffee makers are a good investment in more methods than a single. Initially, everybody likes an excellent strong cup of coffee. But who likes hanging about in those lengthy lines at the coffee shop and paying additional of four dollars for each cup? That’s true, no one. An espresso maker is a good choice for those who desire to make coffee in the ease of their own house and save a lot of cash in the process.

Many espresso makers are quite cheap and can escort to years of coffee ecstasy. How over and over you have been to your neighboring coffee shop and got the incorrect order? Excess of flog cream and sometimes too hot or too cold? With the hundreds of inhabitants sifting all the way through the coffee shop on a daily basis, somebody is bound to get something they did not ask for. It happens. If you wish for an ideal cup of espresso coffee each morning, served precisely the way you wish for it, then it’s good to buy an espresso maker. Espresso coffee is extremely caffeinated to provide you a jerk of energy, as well as an appetizing morning drink. Especially mochas can charge everywhere from three to five dollars a cup, that can combine quickly.

Take it from a few people, a recuperating coffee fan, they would simply give five dollars per day for coffee and then speculate where all their money had gone. That can tote up to thirty-five dollars a week, which is approximately $150 per month. Imagine the whole lot you can purchase with an additional $150 per month. You would purchase an espresso maker that’s for certain.

Preparing espresso coffee brews at home is simple. Plainly boil some milk, insert espresso coffee, and the flavor syrup you wish for. Boiled milk, coffee and a little chocolate syrup makes a tasty mocha! There are lots of flavored syrups obtainable online or at most provisions shop that you can purchase to provoke endless coffee brews potential.

What to Look for When Choosing a One-cup Coffee Maker

Saturday, February 21st, 2009
coffee
Stephanie Larkin asked:

Single-serve coffee systems and one cup coffee makers were first introduced in the late 1990s, and have become more and more popular with each passing year. If you are considering a one cup coffee maker for your house or office, there are a number of things you should consider in making your decision.

Types of Single Serve Coffee Makers

These days, a one cup coffee maker is more than a just a miniature drip coffee maker. There are many different kinds of coffee makers that only make one or two servings of coffee at a time. They include some of the oldest types of coffee makers in the world - the French press and the steam mocha pot, for instance. However, when most people refer to one-cup coffee makers today, they’re talking about automatic coffee makers. These fall into two different types of machine - a drip coffee maker that serves up one cup of coffee at a time, or the so-called single-serve coffee systems that use pods, cups or some other sort of special delivery system for coffee.

The first thing to consider when deciding on a single cup coffee maker is whether you’re willing to be limited in your choice of coffee. The major brands of single serve coffee makers - Senseo, Tassimo, and Keurig - all require that you use coffee that is specially packaged for their machines. If a wide selection of coffees is important to you, or if you have a specific favorite, you’ll either want to be sure that the coffee maker you choose offers your favorite brand of coffee or choose a standard drip coffee maker that brews a single cup at a time.

What to look for: One-Cup Drip Coffee Makers

There are only a few considerations if you’re choosing a one-cup drip coffee maker. They include:

Does the coffee maker require paper filters, or does it use a permanent filter?

Does the coffee maker dispense coffee into a regular sized mug?

Can the height be adjusted for a larger mug or does it come with a thermal travel mug for easy dispensing?

Can you make two or more cups immediately after one another?

Can it be set to start your coffee automatically on a timer?

What to look for: Single Serve Coffee Systems

All single serve coffee systems have a number of things in common - they all have a reservoir to hold water, a boiler or heater to heat water, and some sort of specially designed coffee-and-filter combination through which the water is either pumped or dripped to extract the coffee. The major difference between the brands is in the coffee holder/filter mechanism. Each of the major brands uses a different kind of system.

Coffee Pod Systems

Many of the single serve coffee systems use coffee ‘pods’ (sometimes called coffee pads in other markets). The pods are an all-in-one coffee and filter arrangement that most often look like a large, round tea bag. There are standard pod sizes for single serving, double serving and espresso pods, and the better coffee pod systems will include coffee baskets to fit each of the three sizes so that you can use the coffee maker with the widest variety of coffees. In addition, there are products on the market that allow you to create properly sized coffee pods using any brand of coffee. The results are variable and it can be time-consuming to make your own coffee pods, though, so you may want to be certain that your favorite coffee is available in pods before choosing one of the coffee pod systems.

Single-Serve Coffee Brewing Systems

In addition to the pod systems, there are several one cup coffee systems that use a patented, proprietary ‘mini-brewer’ that is sized to fit their machines. The most popular of these are the Keurig brewing system, the Senseo and the Tassimo brewing system. Each of them uses a very similar mechanism for making your coffee. You simply drop one of the pre-packed pre-measured coffee ‘cups’ or ‘discs’ into the coffee maker, hit a button and wait. The cup or disc contains both the coffee and the filter. The machine is designed to force water through the disposable brewer and dispense it directly into the cup. When your cup is finished brewing, you simply remove the spent brewer and toss it out - no dealing with messy grinds, and since the coffee never touches any part of the machine, you can easily make multiple cups of coffee in different flavors and roasts without worrying about crossing flavors.

The biggest thing to consider when choosing one of the coffee brewing systems is whether the coffee that you prefer is available in packages that fit your machine. Currently, Keurig’s K-cups seem to come in the largest variety, with more flavors and roasts being added frequently, but each of the major brands is affiliated with one of the world’s major coffee roasting houses.

One further consideration when choosing a coffee brewing system is the cost of the coffee. As a general rule, you will pay more for coffee when you’re buying capsules, cups or pods for single serve machines, and in most cases, you have to order your coffee through the manufacturer. Also, few of them are sold in supermarkets or groceries.

New Year Predictions

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Ernie Fitzpatrick asked:

Every year most Americans make some crazy new year’s resolutions that are usually good for about thirty days- the first quarter at the outside. For some the new year will start tragically they won’t have lived but a few hours into the new year before being arrested for DWI or DUI. Worse yet some will die as a result of their injuries and lack of self control. What a waste of life- even if it wasn’t all that good from their vantage point.

For others, the battle fields of Iraq and Afghanistan will be where they take their last breath.

But, let’s move away from the serious stuff and move into a little more frivolity. I say that because I like to make some mental predictions for the coming new calendar year. I’m not betting the farm, nor even a triple grande extra hot latte from Starbucks. But neither am I forecasting the following without some serious thinking going into the idea(s). I dount that many, if any, will bother to remember these predictions, so what have I got to lose, other than your laughter as you read them.

Are you ready?

1-The next president of the United States will be Michael Bloomberg. This is nothing new as I set up a web site last year just to keep tabs on him. As I tracked him in ‘07, there was nothing that made me feel that he wasn’t running- not even his denials. It doesn’t get more wild than this: a third party candidate does what Ross Perot couldn’t do in 1992, but awakened the possibility.

2-The Dow, which closed 2007 at 13,265 will end the year below that! Just how much depends on too many dependent and independent variables to predict.

3-Our economy will see a 50% increase in inflation (year over year). Ben Bernanke can’t keep printing money and adding tens of billions to the system to try and bail lout the housing market without having that amount of massive liquidity have consequences. And with a down economy, that’s called stagflation! But, it beats deflation which worries everyone.

4-The US$ had a terrible year, falling from a close of $83.30 in 2006 to $76.70 in 2007, but 2008 will not provide any relief. The trade deficit will continue at peak levels and more of our enemies will move out of the US$ and into the Euro, Yen, and even the yuan.

5-The three previous points above have to take a toll on the price of oil. In fact, it’s the hidden tax of increased oil prices that will cause oil to drop for $95 a barrel to under $75 in ‘08. Not all news is good, but the good news steams from bad news.

6-The good news of progress in Iraq will be offset by the bad news of Iran and Israel. I’ll leave that one there without further ado.

7-We will see increased weird and unexplainable (though Gore will tell you he knows why)weather and climate conditions that will allow global warming fanatics to claim they’re right while the other side will claim the evidence supports their position. Could it just be the building of galactic precursors to the many events of 2012 instead?

8-Bush will not be able to leave office (which allows for 20 days in ‘09 as well) without a major hit somewhere to our interests that will be MAJOR. This does not limit the attack to within our shores.

9-The internet will experience it’s worst attack to date. Stay tuned!

10-We will see a movement toward inclusiveness which is just the opposite of what we’re seeing now. Just how that will come about, I know not; however, by the end of the year, we’ll see the evidences.

We will survive!

There’s a principle involved here that’s called the Axial Age, or a time when the collective consciousness increases at exponential rates, which has happened in times past, and that’s what I’m betting we’re headed to over the next few years. It’s our only salvation (and I’m not talking salvistically speaking alone). We will see an awakening of he spirit of mankind that will rival the 550-600BCE era.

Out of the crap that seems to overwhelm us will come our hope. We are all in this together and discovering that simple fact will be the beginnings of a ONENESS that’s always been destiny.
